We arrived in September 1974 and lived at 28 Road 2 Vale
of Tempe.
I have so many fond memories...there were so many things to see and experience
despite only being 9 and leaving when I was 11. I played netball, badminton
and then basketball for the Joey's Club. Trophy night at Joey dances were
always a lot of innocent fun (and for some maybe not!). I also recall getting
up early every morning for swimming training at the Penang Swimming Club and
spending all day at swimming carnivals and sucking on pure glucose tablets.
At the Snow's Club, we watched outdoor movies, went to dances and played the
pinball machines while parents "socialised"!
At the rear of Road 2 there was a bicycle track where RAAF and local kids
alike would race each other.
Where else could a child have the freedom to cycle, hang out in the neighbourhood
around and even catch a taxi on their own!
The people I can remember most are Phillip and Frank McInerny, Brett Chappel,
Michelle Thompson and the Crosses who were neighbours. But Craig Gant, Lynn
Howitt and Richard Kajewski are other names I can easily recall.
I loved attending school, playing elastics and knuckles, group skipping using
long ropes, drinking the many flavours of Fanta from the tuckshop, more intra
and inter school sports, and in class doing the coloured SRA card activity
in that white wooden box on wheels!
The family were then posted to Melbourne where I completed high school. The
final posting was to Amberley in QLD where Dad retired. The family (including
my sister Kaylene, who is a few years older than me) are still all in Brisbane.
I'm heading to the Penang reunion in Sept- I'm really looking forward to seeing
those places (no doubt unrecognizable) and tasting all those amazing dishes!
Hopefully I will run into a few people that I remember!
See you then.
