Age 7 - 9, I was stationed on Penang with my new stepfather, Staff Sgt. D. Rokahr, mother Eva, sister Hninwai (nin-way; Burmese).
Best friend was Daniel Dyer, son of Brgdr Gen. Dyer. (US).
Loved everything about Penang and my two wonderful years.
My memory is fair and I could write twice as much and thick as Harry Potter books.
I still have pictures, too.
I remember...the straw music huts, sports on the soccor field where Daniel dislocated his elbow at high jump (he was good at it), milk duties...and a very special girl I liked who was tall for her age (Michelle, I think). Michelle and I drew with charcoal, the history book pictures, all around the balcony, and all the classes pitched in to paint and finish it.
I joined the Boy Scouts and went camping up the big mountain with the big red army ants around us. I joined Joey's Sports Club, and during a boxing tournament I had to fight another good friend. The crowd was throwing money into the rink and yelling...hit him...I couldn't because I made his nose bleed.
All the jelly fish, mud skippers, cat fish fishing, and the private swim club with the highest board I ever dove off of. Nazi Goren, no more said on that. The ticks I had to pull off my sheppard, Quonto. The native religious rituals, walking on coals, those large heavy needled ritual things carried by the native men, teh snake temple. Finally, to keep this short the vendors with the ice bloke shaved into a round slurpy with different juices and the hot noodle carts.
Many fond memories indeed...Penang I loved...
Peace (Y)
