Change of Venue

The reunion which was being planned for Brisbane has now been incorporated into this Anniversary reunion in Canberra.

Background

In 1958 the first school created specifically to cater for RAAF dependants was established in Penang and was called the Interim School. There were 150 students and the principal and staff were recruited from wives of servicemen serving at Butterworth. Prior to its opening in August 1958, primary school aged RAAF dependants attended either the RAF School in Butterworth or the British Army Children's School in Penang. Secondary school aged RAAF dependants attended either the British Secondary School in the Cameron Highlands or in Singapore or studied by correspondence.

In January 1959 the Department of Air established the official RAAF School Penang in two leased houses in Residency Road with teaching staff selected from the Departments of Education of both New South Wales and Victoria. It had its own school badge and school magazine, 'Austral'. In 1962 RAAF School Penang was transferred to its own specifically designed and built premises in Jalan Azyze, Hillside, Penang. A new school badge was designed.
