Sharing of Information
Posted: 17 March 2008
I have received an email from FLTLT Bryan Cavanagh (currently based
at the RAAF Support SQN at RMAF Butterworth) regarding using information
published on this site.
As this year marks 50 years of continuous combat support at RMAF Butterworth,
Bryan is putting together a short magazine highlighting some of the
personal experiences of those who have been up here over the last 50
years.
He would like to use some of the material available on this site for
the magazine.
If anyone has any objections to their personal information being used
in this way, please contact Bryan directly by email at Bryan.Cavanagh
@ defence.gov.au. (Remove the space
either side of the @ - this prevents the email address being scooped
up by spammers)
Research Question
Posted: 22 January 2008
Dear Cynthia,
The RAAF schooldays website has been passed onto me by my dear friend
and local historian Khoo Salma Nasution, here in Penang. Over the years
she has helped me in the research work for conservation projects
I have undertaken, Suffolk House, Hong Leong Bank (Mui Bank), ABN AMRO
bank, and many others.
I have spent almost all day reading your fantastic
website - no I'm not an Australian and I only arrived in penang in 1995,
but your site is filling in many of the blanks in the architectural
map.
This is the first time I have seen a picture of the
cold storage creameries - it was a bulldozed site when I arrived and
now Cititel Hotel hogs the spot.
Railway Station
Railway Station (yep I'm also researching this buildings)
does anyone have images of the steam launches which went between the
railway terminal on the island and the Prai railway station?
Mariophile (Annex)
Currently I am working on a proposal to restore the Mariophile chapel,
resthouse and quarters, which were in the grounds next tothe RAAF Annex.
There are currently no photographs of these old buildings and as I was
leaving the site recently the Fathers mentioned that the RAAF once leased
the buildings and grounds. Possibly at the time many of the changes
took place to the Anglo Indian Guest house on the hill and the chapel.
It would be just amazing if any of your alumni had information or photographs
of these buildings including the class rooms, if so please send anything
you have to: dr.gwynn@gmail.com
Recognise this building?
Am also researching for a book on a Welsh architect whose company Boutcher
& Co built many of the homes rented to the RAAF and owned by the
Choong Lye Hock Estate.
I have a photo taken after WWll by Boutcher - at first I thought it
was the Australian club (not sure who that involved). But my landlady
(grand daughter of Choong Lye Hock) thought it was the home of an Air
Vice Marshall (?). Would anyone recognise this?

If anyone can help Gwynn with information she seeks,
she can be contacted on: dr.gwynn@gmail.com
