The following few pages should help to refresh some memories and remind us once again, what was so special about living in Penang. These were halcyon days - carefree, euphoric and as it turns out - never to be forgotten. Perhaps we could only sense back then as youngsters, what impressions we were going to carry with us for the years to come.

Who could forget the fabulous dances we used to enjoy, including Joeys Dances and Scout Dances at the RAAF Club, the pool dances at Penang Swimming Club, the School Socials and the Fleetwood Mac Club. Excellent renditions of western music were performed by various local bands, including the Super Jets, The Shifters and The Dimensions. If you have photos to share - just send them in!

Debutantes Ball

1965 Annual Dance
RAAF Club, Penang

Queensland Times
Tuesday 3 August, 1965

Seven attractive young daughters of R.A.A.F. men in Malaysia made their debut. It was the first time during an R.A.A.F. social occasion in Malaysia that debutants have been presented. The young ladies, dressed in beautiful formal gown, were escorted by members of the R.A.A.F. and Australian Army.

The occasion was the Annual dance of No. 478 Maintenance Squadron, R.A.A.F. Base, Butterworth, held at the R.A.A.F. Club, Penang. The debutants, all daughters of members of the squadron, were presented to Air Commodore W. E. Townsend, Officer Commanding Butterworth.

Mrs. A. Morna, wife of Leading Aircraftsman Gordon Morna of Springvale, Melbourne, was Matron of Honor, and trained the girls. Mrs. Townsend, wife of the Air Commodore, presented a sash to each of the debutants.

Participants:
Maureen Boyce, Sandra Sullival, Francis Halsted, Suzanne Rinehart, Christine Smith, Sonja Cosgrove, Lyn Stuart
